For various reasons, I have been shedding a lot of possessions really. Anything that’s worth selling I am shoving on Amazon, and that includes a lot of books I’ve acquired through various ways and means over the years.
Since I’m getting rid, I thought I’d do a few quick-fire reviews for them – let the door hit them on the way out as it were.
So, in no order.
Maddox – The Alphabet Of Manliness – Maddox was one of the mid-period internet celebrities and his book is still quite funny, but it’s dated badly and he is now irrelevant as an individual. Worth reading once.
Thomas Mullen – The Revisionists – The most boring time-travel book I’ve ever read.
Will Elliott – Pilgrims – Serviceable fantasy, plotted a little bit like a 1980s kids’ movie although darker.
Paul McAuley – In The Mouth Of The Whale – Deliberately or not, so close to the work of Iain M. Banks as to be suspicious. Infinitely inferior to it, while we’re at it.
Michael Logan – Apocalypse Cow – Not even 1/10th as funny as the pun in its title. Grim, depressing, unfunny and stupid.
Day Of Vengeance (Comic Book) – Reasonably entertaining book surrounding the Infinite Crisis event from DC Comics in 2006.
Shadowland (Comic Book) – A Daredevil event comic from a few years ago. I was majorly out of the loop by the time I read this and remember almost nothing about it, so clearly a good read.
Kristin Cashore – Bitterblue – Identical to her earlier work and starring a protagonist of Mary Sue-level talents.
Alex Boese – The Museum Of Hoaxes – Enjoyable light reading analysing hoaxes that have gone on through history.
Matthew Sprange -Shadowmage Trilogy – Well written swords and sorcery starring a character so humourless he may as well be a door.
More to come…
